f\u00fcr die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung Halberstadts war im 19. Jahrhundert der Anschluss ans Eisenbahnnetz. 1843 konnte in der Sch\u00fctzenstra\u00dfe das erste Bahnhofsgeb\u00e4ude eingeweiht werden. Dieser<br \/>\nKopfbahnhof reichte jedoch bald f\u00fcr den stark ansteigenden Eisenbahnverkehr nicht mehr aus.<br \/>\nDaher erfolgte 1868 an der Stadtgrenze zu Wehrstedt der Bau eines Durchgangsbahnhofes. Somit konnten die wichtigen Verkehrsrouten nach Vienenburg, Magdeburg und Halle bedient werden.<br \/>\nAufgrund seiner Bedeutung als G\u00fcterverkehrsknotenpunkt, vor allem f\u00fcr das Milit\u00e4r, war der Bahnhof mehrfach strategisches Ziel von Bombardierungen im Zweiten Weltkrieg und wurde am 7. und 8. April 1945 nahezu vollst\u00e4ndig zerst\u00f6rt.<br \/>\nAm 19. Mai 1945 rollten wieder die ersten Z\u00fcge nach Vienenburg. Die stark besch\u00e4digte Klinkerarchitektur des Bahnhofsgeb\u00e4udes wurde notd\u00fcrftig mit einer Vorhangfassade aus Aluminium verkleidet und fristete so noch bis ins 21. Jahrhundert ein ungl\u00fcckliches Dasein. Das schlechte Erscheinungsbild f\u00fchrte sogar zu der nicht sehr schmeichelhaften Auszeichnung als \u201eDeutschlands sch\u00e4bigster Bahnhof\u201c.<br \/>\n2010 erfolgte ein umfangreicher Umbau des Bahnhofskomplexes mit der Sanierung des Empfangsgeb\u00e4udes und der Teilwiederherstellung der historischen Klinkerfassade, die in die moderne Architektur eingebunden wurde.
